7. Ultimate Questions

by John Blanchard

Life is full of questions. Some are trivial, some more serious — and some tremendously important. Even as you read these words you may have questions about your health, your financial situation, your job, your family or your future.

But the greatest, the ultimate questions, are about God and your relationship to him. Nothing in life is more important than this. Good health, financial stability, secure employment, a contented family and a hopeful future are all things that people want. Yet even these are temporary and eventually pointless unless you have a living relationship with God, one that is clear and certain — and will last for ever.

In the following pages you will discover why such a relationship is so urgently needed — and how it is possible.

The questions that follow are the most serious and important that anyone could ask. The answers are those that everyone needs.

Please read these pages thoroughly and carefully — and if necessary more than once.

You cannot afford to miss their message.

Is Anyone There?

This is the fundamental question. If God does not exist, searching for him is pointless. Anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists. (Hebrews 11:6) While it is impossible to 'prove' God in a mathematical sense, the evidence is very convincing. Take the existence of the universe. To call it the result of an 'accident' raises many questions — and answers none. The same is true of the 'Big Bang' theory. Where, for instance, did the raw materials come from? Not even a 'big bang' can make something out of nothing! The evolutionary idea is widespread but just as weak; how can 'nothing' evolve into 'something', let alone earth's amazingly complex life forms?

All other theories are equally fragile. The only satisfactory explanation is this: In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis1:1) Our world is not the random result of a gigantic fluke involving ingredients that were 'always there'. Instead, the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. (Hebrews 11:3) Creation had a beginning, and it was God who brought it into being. He spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. (Psalm 33:9)

This is reinforced by the amazing order and design seen everywhere and by the universal laws which hold everything together, from the vastness of outer space to microscopic organisms. But design demands a designer and laws a lawgiver — and God is both! The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth. (Acts 17:24)

But the strongest 'creation evidence' is man himself. Unlike other animals, man has something we call 'personality'; he makes intelligent choices, has a conscience and can distinguish between right and wrong. He is capable of love and compassion. Above all, he has an instinct to worship. Where did he get these qualities? Neither evolution nor an avalanche of accidents could have produced them. The clearest answer is this: The Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being. (Genesis 2:7) Man is not an accident; he is fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14) by the Creator of the universe.

IS GOD SPEAKING?

The question is vital. Left to ourselves we are totally ignorant of God. Can you fathom the mysteries of God? Can you probe the limits of the Almighty? (Job 11:7) God is beyond our understanding and we need him to reveal himself to us. Creation is one of the main ways in which he does so. The heavens declare the glory of God . the skies proclaim the work of his hands. (Psalm 19:1) The sheer size of the universe and its amazing balance, variety and beauty reveal a great deal about the God who made it. In creation God shows his stupendous power, awesome intelligence and brilliant imagination. Since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities — his eternal power and divine nature — have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. (Romans 1:20)

When we communicate with one another we rely heavily on words. God also speaks to men through words — the words of the Bible. Nearly 4000 times in the Old Testament alone (500 times in the first five books) you will find phrases like 'the Lord spoke', 'the Lord commanded' and 'the Lord said'. This is why it is claimed that Scripture never had its origin in the word of man but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. (2Peter 1:21)

In no other literature can we find scores of clear and detailed prophecies made by men claiming to speak from God, and later fulfilled to the letter. The odds against this happening by chance are too vast to be taken seriously.

Then there is the Bible's impact on people's lives. No other book has had such a life changing power. Millions of people, over thousands of years, have proved by personal experience that the law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. (Psalm 19:7-8)

After 2,000 years no expert in any field has ever disproved a single statement in the Bible. The reason is this: All Scripture is God breathed. (2 Timothy 3:16) We should therefore accept it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God. (1 Thessalonians 2:13)

WHAT IS GOD LIKE?

This is obviously the next question to be faced. To acknowledge that God exists is one thing, and to acknowledge him in the general sense that God speaks to us in creation and through the pages of the Bible is another. But we need to know more. What is God actually like? The Bible gives us many clear and positive answers to this tremendously important question. Here are some of them.

God is personal. God is not a 'thing', power, or influence. He thinks, feels desires and acts in ways that show him to be a living personal Being. But he is not just 'the man upstairs' or some kind of 'superman'. The Lord is the true God; he is the living God, the eternal King. (Jeremiah 10:10)

God is one. There is only one true God. He says, I am the first and the last; apart from me there is no God. (Isaiah 44:6) Yet God has revealed himself as a 'trinity' of three Persons — the Father, the son (Jesus Christ) and the Holy Spirit each of whom is truly, fully and equally God. The Bible speaks of the glory of God the Father; (Philippians 2:11) it says that the Word (Jesus Christ) was God; (John 1:1) and it speaks of the Lord, who is the Spirit. (2 Corinthians 3:18) While there is only one God, there are three persons in the Godhead.

God is spirit. He has no physical dimensions. He does not have a body, nor does he have any characteristics that can be defined in terms of size and shape. God is spirit, and his worshippers must worship in spirit and in truth. (John 4:24) This means that God is invisible. No one has ever seen God. (John 1:18) It also means that he is not confined to one place at a time, but is everywhere all the time: 'Do I not fill heaven and earth?' declares the Lord. (Jeremiah 23:24) Quite apart from anything else, this means that God is fully aware of everything that happens everywhere. This includes not only everything you do and say, but every thought that passes through your mind.

God is eternal. God has no beginning. In the Bible's words from everlasting to everlasting you are God. (Psalm 90:2) There never was a time when God did not exist and there never will be a time when he will not exist. God describes himself as the one who is, and who was, and who is to come (Revelation 1:8). And he remains eternally the same: I the Lord do not change. (Malachi 3:6) All that God ever was he still is and always will be.

God is independent. Every other living being is dependent on people or things, and ultimately on God — but God is totally independent of his creation. He can survive on his own. He is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else. (Acts 17:25)

God is holy. He is majestic in holiness, awesome in glory. (Exodus 15:11) There can be no comparison with the holiness of God. There is no one holy like the Lord, (1 Samuel 2:2) who is utterly without fault or defect. The Bible says of him, Your eyes are too pure to look on evil; you cannot tolerate wrong. (Habakkuk 1:13) And this holy God demands holiness from every one of us. His command to us today is: Be holy, because I am holy. (1 Peter 1:16)

God is just. The Bible says that the Lord is a God of justice and that righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne. (Isaiah 30:18; Psalm 97:2) God is not only our Creator and Sustainer; he is also our Judge rewarding and punishing, in time and eternity, with a justice that is perfect and beyond any appeal or dispute.

God is perfect. His knowledge is perfect. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. (Hebrews 4:13) God knows everything in the past, present and future, including all our thoughts, words and deeds. His wisdom is perfect and utterly beyond our understanding. Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! (Romans 11:33)

God is sovereign. He is the sole and supreme ruler of the universe and nothing whatever is outside of his control. The Lord does whatever pleases him, in the heavens and on the earth. (Psalm 135:6) With God there are no accidents or surprises. He writes all the world's history and works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will. (Ephesians 1:11) God needs no advice or consent for anything he chooses to do. Nor can anyone prevent him doing what he pleases: No one can hold back his hand or say to him: 'What have you done?' (Daniel 4:35)

God is omnipotent. He is all-powerful. In his own words I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me? (Jeremiah 32:27) This does not mean that God can do anything (he cannot lie, or change, or make mistakes, or sin, or deny himself) but that he can do anything he wishes consistent with his character.

These are just brief sketches of some of the things God has revealed in the Bible about his own nature and character. There are other truths about God in the Bible (and we will look at one of these later on) though there are many things about him we cannot possibly understand. He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted. (Job 5:9) In that sense, the Almighty is beyond our reach (Job 37:23) and no amount of human intelligence or reasoning can change that. This should hardly surprise us: If we could understand God he would be unworthy of our worship.

WHO AM I?

The pressures and problems of modern living are driving many people to a restless search for meaning and purpose in life. We have seen something of who God is; what about us? Why do we exist? Why are we here? Does human life have any meaning or purpose? The first thing to get clear is that man does not merely 'exist'. He is more than an accidental accumulation of atoms which all happen to fit together into a convenient package we call 'a human being'. The Bible tells us that he was specifically created by a wise and holy God. God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:27) Man is more than a highly developed animal or refined ape. He is as different from other creatures as animals are from vegetables and vegetables are from minerals. In terms of size, man is minute compared with the sun, moon and stars, but God has given him a unique and honoured place in the universe.

This is seen in one of God's first commands to man: Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground. (Genesis 1:28) Man became God's personal representative on earth, with authority over all other living creatures.

But man was also given special dignity. Being created 'in the image of God' does not mean that he was made the same size or shape as God (we have seen that God does not have 'size' or 'shape') nor that man was a miniature of God, possessing all his qualities in small quantities. It means that man was created as a spiritual, rational moral and immortal being, with a nature that was perfect. In other words he was a true reflection of God's holy character.

What is more; man gladly and constantly chose to obey all God's commands and as a result lived in perfect harmony with him. Man had no 'identity crisis' then! He knew exactly who he was and why he was in the world, and he obediently took his God given place.

But not only was man totally fulfilled and completely satisfied with his position in the world. God was satisfied with man! We know this because the Bible tells us that when his work of creation was complete, with man as its crowning glory, God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. (Genesis 1:31) At that point in history; perfect people lived in a perfect environment in a perfect relationship with each other and in perfect harmony with God. This is hardly the situation today! What happened?

WHAT WENT WRONG?

The straightforward answer to the question is this: sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin. (Romans 5:12)

The first man and woman (Adam and Eve) were given great freedom, but also one serious warning. You must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die. (Genesis 2:17) This was an ideal test of man's willingness to obey what God said simply because God said it. But the devil tempted Eve to disbelieve and disobey God's words, and she did. When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. (Genesis 3:6)

At that moment 'sin entered the world'. By his deliberate disobedience man cut himself off from God. Instead of loving God, Adam and Eve were terrified of him: they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. (Genesis 3:8) Instead of being assured confident and happy, their sin had made them ashamed, guilty and afraid.

But God had said that man would die if he disobeyed, and he did. Death means separation, and in one terrible moment man became separated from God; he died spiritually. He also began to die physically, and now had a dead soul and a dying body. But that was not all: the children of Adam and Eve inherited their corrupt nature and sinful character. From then on, like pollution at the source of a river, the poison of sin has flowed to all Adam's descendants, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned. (Romans 5:12)

Notice that important word 'all', which obviously includes the writer and the reader of this page. We may never meet on this earth, but we have this in common — we are sinners and we are dying. If we claim to be without sin we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us, (1 John 1:8) and if we claim not to be dying we are being ridiculous. Fooling around with the facts does nothing to change them.

Many of today's newspaper, television and radio headlines remind us of the fact that the world is in a mess. It is easy to condemn violence, injustice, disorder and wrongdoing in society, but before criticizing others ask yourself whether you are perfect and living a life pleasing to a holy God. Are you absolutely honest, pure, loving and selfless? God knows the answers to these questions — and so do you! All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23) You are a sinner by birth, by nature, by practice and by choice, and you urgently need to ace the facts — and the consequences.

IS SIN SERIOUS?

When disease is diagnosed, it is important to ask the question: 'Is it serious?' It is even more important to ask that question about the spiritual disease of sin. Many people will almost cheerfully admit to being sinners, because they have no idea what this means. They treat it as being 'just human nature', or they shelter behind the fact that 'everybody does it' . But those statements dodge the real issue: is sin serious? Here are some of the things the Bible says about you as a sinner.

You are debased. This does not mean that you are as bad as you can possibly be, nor that you are constantly committing every sin. Nor does it mean that you cannot tell right from wrong, or do things that are pleasant and helpful. But it does mean that sin has invaded every part of your nature and personality — your mind, will, affections, conscience, disposition and imagination. The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. (Jeremiah 17:9) The root of your trouble is not what you do but what you are! You sin because you are a sinner.

You are defiled. The Bible pulls no punches here: For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. (Mark 7:21-22) Notice that the list includes thoughts, words and actions. This shows that in God's sight all sin is equally serious: Some people limit their idea of sin to things like murder, adultery and robbery, but the Bible makes it clear that we have no right to think of sin in this way. Sin is anything that fails to meet God's perfect standards. Anything we say, think or do that is less than perfect is sin. Now face up to this question: Who can say, 'I have kept my heart pure; I am clean and without sin'? (Proverbs 20:9) Can you? If not, you are defiled.

You are defiant. The Bible teaches that sin is lawlessness, (1 John 3:4) deliberate rebellion against God's authority and law. No civil law forces you to lie, cheat, have impure thoughts, or sin in any other way. You choose to sin. You choose to break God's holy law. You deliberately disobey him and that is serious, because God is a righteous judge who expresses his wrath every day. (Psalm 7:11) God can never be 'soft' about sin, and you can be sure that not even one sin will go unpunished.

Some small part of God's punishment of sin comes in this life (though we may not recognize it). But the final punishment will be inflicted after death, when on the Day of Judgment each one of us will give an account of himself to God. (Romans 14:12)

WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE?

There are many ideas about what happens when we die. Some say we are all annihilated, some that we all go to heaven. Others believe in a place where sinful souls are prepared for heaven. But nothing in the Bible supports any of these ideas.

Instead, we read this: man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment. (Hebrews 9:27) Those in a right relationship with God will then be welcomed into heaven, to spend eternity in his glorious presence. All others will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power. (2 Thessalonians 1:9) The Bible's most common word for this is 'hell'. Here are four important truths about it:

Hell is factual. It is not something 'invented by the church'. T he Bible says more about hell than it does about heaven and leaves no doubt about its reality. It speaks of people being condemned to hell and thrown into hell. (Matthew 23:33; Matthew 5:29)

Hell is fearful. It is described in the Bible as a place of torment; a fiery furnace; a place of everlasting burning and unquenchable fire. (Luke 16:28; Matthew 13:42; Isaiah 33:14; Matthew 3:12)) It is a place of suffering, with weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 22:13) and in which there is no rest day or night. (Revelation 14:11)) These are terrible words, but they are true. Those in hell are cut off from all good, cursed by God and banished from even the smallest help or comfort that his presence brings.

Hell is final. All the roads to hell are one way streets. There is no exit. Between hell and heaven a great chasm has been fixed. (Luke 16:26) The horror, loneliness and agony of hell are not in order to purify but to punish — for ever!

Hell is fair. The Bible tells us that God will judge the world with justice, (Acts 17:31) and he is perfectly just in sending sinners to hell. After all, he is giving them what they have chosen. They reject God here; he rejects them there. They choose to live ungodly lives; he confirms their choice — for ever. God can hardly be accused of injustice or unfairness!

In the light of these terrible truths, you need to think very carefully about a question once put to a group of people in the New Testament: How will you escape belong condemned to hell? (Matthew 23:33)

CAN RELIGION HELP?

Man has been called a religious animal. The Encyclopedia of Religion and Ethics lists hundreds of ways in which men have tried to satisfy their religious longings and feelings. They have worshipped the sun, moon and stars; earth, fire and water idols of wood, stone and metal; fish, birds and animals. They have worshipped countless gods and spirits which have been the products of their own perverted imagination. Others have attempted to worship the true God through a vast variety of sacrifices, ceremonies, sacraments and services. But 'religion', however sincere, can never solve man's sin problem, for at least three reasons.

Religion can never satisfy God. Religion is man's attempt to make himself right with God, but any such attempt is futile because even man's best efforts are flawed and so are unacceptable to God. The Bible could not be clearer: all our righteous acts are like filthy rags. (Isaiah 64:6) God demands perfection; religion fails to meet the demand.

Religion can never remove sin. Your virtues can never cancel out your vices. Good deeds can never remove bad ones, If a person gets right with God it is not by works, so that no one can boast. (Ephesians 2:9) No religious efforts or experiences — christening, confirmation, baptism, holy communion, churchgoing, prayers, gifts, sacrifices of time and effort, Bible reading or anything else — can cancel out a single sin.

Religion can never change man's sinful nature. A person's behaviour is not the problem, only the symptom. The heart of man's problem is the problem of man's heart, and by nature man's heart is corrupt and depraved. Going to church and taking part in religious ceremonies may make you feel good but they cannot make you good. Who can bring what is pure from the impure? No one! (Job 14:4)

Some of the religious activities mentioned above are obviously 'good' in themselves. For example, it is right to go to church, to read the Bible and to pray, because God tells us to do these things. But you dare not rely on them to make you right with God, Not only are they powerless to do so; trusting in them actually adds to your sin and to your condemnation.

IS THERE AN ANSWER?

Yes there is! and God has provided it. The central message of the Bible is summed up in these words: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)

We saw earlier that a just and holy God must punish sin. But the Bible also tells us that God is love. (1 John 4:8) While God hates sin he loves sinners and longs to forgive them. But how can a sinner be justly pardoned when God's law demands his spiritual and physical death? Only God could solve that problem, and he did so in the person of Jesus Christ. The Father has sent his Son to be the Saviour of the world. (1 John 4:14)

God the Son became a man by taking upon himself human nature. Although Jesus became fully man, he remained fully God: the Bible says that in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form. (Colossians 2:9) He remained as completely God as if he had not become man; he became as completely man as if he were not God. Jesus Christ is therefore unique and the Bible confirms this in many ways. His conception was unique; he had no human father but was conceived in a virgin's womb by the miraculous power of the Holy Spirit. His words were unique: people were amazed at his teaching, because his message had authority. (Luke 4:32) His miracles were unique: he went about healing every sickness and disease among the people, (Matthew 4:23) and on several occasions even raised the dead. His character was unique: he was tempted in every way just as we are — yet was without sin (Hebrews 4:15) so that God the Father could say of him, 'This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.' (Matthew 3:17)

Notice that last sentence! This means that as a man Jesus kept the law of God in every part and therefore was not subject to sin's double death penalty. Yet he was arrested on a trumped up charge, sentenced on false evidence, and eventually crucified at Jerusalem. But his death was not a 'freak' or an unavoidable accident. It was all part of God's set purpose and foreknowledge. (Acts 2:23) The Father sent the Son for the very purpose of paying sin's death penalty, and Jesus willingly came. In his own words, the purpose of his coming into the world was to give his life as a ransom for many. (Matthew 20:28) His death, like his life, was unique.

This makes it vital that you understand what happened when Jesus died, and what his death can mean to you.

WHY THE CROSS?

All the Bible's teaching points to the death of Jesus. Neither his perfect life nor his marvelous teaching nor his powerful miracles are the focus of the Bible's message. These are all important, but above all else Jesus came into the world to die. What makes his death so important? The answer is that he died as a Substitute, a Sin bearer and a Savior.

Jesus the Substitute. This demonstrates the love of God. Sinners are guilty, lost and helpless in the face of God's holy law, which demands punishment for every sin. How can they possibly escape God's righteous wrath? The Bible's answer is this: God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8) As part of an amazing rescue plan God the Son volunteered to take the place of sinners and bear the just penalty for their sin. The sinless Son of God willingly suffered and died for them, the righteous for the unrighteous. (1 Peter 3:18)

Jesus the Sin bearer. This demonstrates the holiness of God. There was nothing 'faked' about Christ's death. The penalty for the sins of others was paid in full by the death of God's sinless Son. As he hung on the cross he cried out, 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?' (Mark 15:34) At that terrible moment God the Father turned his back on his beloved Son, who then endured the penalty of separation from God. Notice how this shows God's perfect holiness. All sin, every sin, must be punished — and when Jesus took the place of sinners he became as accountable for their sins as if he had been responsible for them. The one man who lived a perfect life suffered the double death penalty of the guilty.

Jesus the Savior. This demonstrates the power of God. Three days after his death, Christ was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead. (Romans 1:4) He gave many convincing proofs that he was alive and he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. (Acts 1:3; Romans 6:9) In raising Christ from the dead, God powerfully demonstrated that he accepted his death in the place of sinners as the full and perfect payment of sin's penalty and as the basis on which he can offer a full and free pardon to those who would otherwise be doomed to spend eternity in hell.

But how does all this apply to you? How can you get right with God? How can Christ become your Savior?

HOW CAN I BE SAVED?

Having read this far, do you genuinely want to be saved? Do you want to get right with God — whatever the cost or consequences? If not, you have not grasped the importance of the pages you have read. You should therefore read them again slowly and carefully, asking God to show you the truth. If God has shown you your need, and you do want to be saved, then you must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus. (Acts 20:21)

You must repent. This means a complete change regarding sin. There must be a change of mind. You must admit that you are a sinner, a rebel against a holy and loving God. There must be a change of heart — genuine sorrow and shame at the vileness: and filthiness of your sin. Then you must be willing to forsake it and change the direction of your life. God challenges people to prove their repentance by their deeds. (Acts 26:20) You must do this. God will not forgive any sin you are not willing to forsake. To repent is to go in a new direction, seeking wholeheartedly to live in a way that pleases God.

You must have faith in Christ. First of all, this means accepting that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God (Matthew 16:16) and that Christ died for the ungodly. (Romans 5:6) Secondly, it means believing that in the power and love Christ is able and willing to save you. Thirdly it means actually putting your trust in Christ, relying upon him and him alone to make you right with God. Your proud; sinful nature will fight against abandoning trust in your own 'goodness' or religion. Yet you have no alternative. You must stop trusting in anything else and trust only in Christ, who is able to save completely those who come to God through him. (Hebrews 7:25)

If God has shown you your need, and given you this desire, then turn to Christ — and do it now! Ideally, pray aloud to him; this may help you to be clear about what you are doing. Confess that you are a guilty, lost and helpless sinner, and with all your heart ask Christ to save you, and to take his rightful place as the Lord of your life, enabling you to turn from sin and to live for him.

The Bible says that if you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saves and that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. (Romans 10:9; Romans 10:13) If you truly trust Christ as your Savior and acknowledge him as your Lord, you can claim these promises as your own.

WHICH WAY NOW?

If you are now trusting in Christ there are many wonderful things in which you can rejoice. For instance, you are now in a right relationship with God: the Bible calls this being 'justified' and says that since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 5:1) Through Christ, your sins have been dealt with: everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name. (Acts 10:43) You are now a member of God's family: all who trust in Christ are given the right to become children of God. (John 1:12) You are eternally secure: there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. (Romans 8:1) God himself has come into your life in the person of the Holy Spirit: the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you. (Romans 8:11) What great truths these are!

Now you need to grow in your new spiritual life. Here are four important things to which you will need to give close attention:

Prayer. You are now able to speak to God as your Father, something you have never been able to do before. You can worship him, praising him for his glory, power, holiness and love. You can ask for daily forgiveness. Not even those who become children of God are perfect, but if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9) You can thank him every day for his goodness to you. There are so many things for which you will want to thank him including the everyday benefits of life that we can so easily take for granted. But you will specially want to thank him for saving you for accepting you into his family, and for giving you eternal life. You should never find it difficult to do this ! You can also ask for his help, strength and guidance in your own life and in the lives of others. In particular, you will want to pray for other people you know who are away from God as you once were.

Bible reading. In prayer, you speak to God; in the Bible, God speaks to you. It is therefore very important that you read it every day, to find out what pleases the Lord. (Ephesians 5:10) As you do this, ask him to enable you to understand its meaning and to obey its teaching, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation. (1 Peter 2:2) If you need help in beginning to study the Bible, send for your free copy of the booklet Read, Mark, Learn, a book of guidelines for personal Bible Study based on Mark's Gospel by John Blanchard c/o Evangelical Press at the address below.

Fellowship. Now that you have become a member of God's family he wants you to meet regularly with your brothers and sisters! Let us not give up meeting together ... let us encourage one another. (Hebrews 10:25) This means joining a local church, so make sure that you do this as soon as possible. Choosing the right church is not always easy and you will want to find one which clearly believes and teaches the biblical truths you have been reading in these pages. In your local church you will find out more about God; you will benefit from the experience of others; you will learn the importance of God's special directions about baptism and holy communion; and you will discover the joy of sharing with others the gifts and abilities God has given you. You need the church, and the church needs you!

Service. It will now be your privilege to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. (Deuteronomy 10:12) Always remember that God has saved us and called us to a holy life. (2 Timothy 1:9) Make holiness an absolute priority; it is God's will that you should be holy. (1 Thessalonians 4:3) Then, seek to use your particular gifts in God's service; bear in mind that you were created in Christ Jesus to do good works. (Ephesians 2:10) Finally, be alert for opportunities of telling others how much the Lord has done for you. (Mark 5:19) Telling others about Christ is not only the duty of those who trust him, it is an exhilarating experience!

From now on seek to live in such a way that in every part of your life you declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light! (1 Peter 2:9).

6. How to Break Curses

Primary reason for curses:

(a) Not hearing God's voice
(b) Not doing what He says

There are seven blessings and seven curses referred to in the law in Scripture.
Seven blessings: (Deuteronomy 28)

(1) Exaltation
(2) Reproductiveness
(3) Health
(4) Prosperity, success
(5) Victory
(6) That we are the head and not the tail
(7) That we will be above and not beneath

There are seven curses referred to in the same chapter:

(1) Humiliation
(2) Barrenness
(3) Sickness of every kind
(4) Poverty, failure
(5) Defeat
(6) We will be the tail and not the head
(7) We will be below and not above

Indications of Curses:

(1) Mental, emotional breakdown
(2) Repeated sickness, especially hereditary sickness - doctors can't find the cause
(3) Feminine problems - barrenness, miscarriage, menstruation problems
(4) Breakdown of marriage - family alienation
(5) Financial insufficiency, poverty. Sometimes poverty for a short period is just a test but if we are always in poverty it could be a curse.
(6) Accident prone
(7) History of unnatural deaths

A curse can be something like an evil thing moving up from the past. It is like a deep shadow.
Note: Proverbs 26:2. A curse is:
"Like a flitting sparrow, like a flying swallow,
So a curse without cause shall not alight."
Therefore, a curse requires a cause to alight.

REASONS FOR CURSES:

(1) Having false gods (Exodus 20:3&4, Deuteronomy 27:15)
(2) Disrespect for parents (Deuteronomy 27:16)
(3) Treachery against a neighbour (Deuteronomy 27:17)
(4) Injustice to the weak (Deuteronomy 27:18&19)
(5) Illicit sex (Deuteronomy 27:20-23)
(Effect of wrong sexual relationships, particularly those outside of marriage or with members of one's family)
(6) Perjury (Deuteronomy 27:25)
(7) Stealing (Zechariah 5:1-4)
(8) Stinginess towards God (Malachi 3:9)
(9) Perverting gospel (Galatians 1:8&9)
(10) Depending on the flesh (Jeremiah 17:5)
(11) Anti-Semitism (Genesis 12:3, Genesis 28:3&14)

SOURCE OF CURSES:

1. God Himself God blesses and curses (Exodus 20:3&5) Breaking the first two commandments:
(a) To have no other Gods
(b) Idolatry
Our God is a jealous God

2. All occult practices Making occultism your God, eg a fortune teller. It is the power behind the fortune teller that matters. In four generations we can have upwards of 30 ancestors.

3. Men who speak on behalf of God
(a) Joshua 6:26, ie Joshua said, "Cursed be the man before the Lord who rises up and builds the city Jericho, he shall lay its foundation with his firstborn, and with his youngest he shall set up its gates." This was fulfilled in 1 Kings 16:34 nearly 500 years later when Hiel of Bethel built Jericho, he laid its foundation with Abriam, his first born, and with his youngest son Segub he set up its gates according to the Word of the Lord which he had spoken through Joshua the son of Nun. Thus curses are self-perpetuating.
(b) 2 Samuel 1:21 Statement by David:
"Oh mountains of Gilboa,
Let there be no dew, nor let there be rain upon you,
Nor fields of offerings.
For the shield of the mighty is cast away there!"
These were the fields of Gilboa upon which Saul and Jonathan had died and David was cursing them. Nearly 3,000 years later this same curse was upon this land and the Jewish people had great difficulty a few years ago in trying to get trees to grow on it.
(c) 2 Kings 5 (Naaman) verse 27, cursed his servant with leprosy forever.

4. God's servants can do this today eg Jesus cursed the fig tree and said, "You can do this also."

5. Persons with relational authority eg husband over wife, parents over children. Words spoken have supernatural powers. The blessing of the father is important.
(a) Genesis 31 - Jacob and Rachel: Rachel had stolen her father's gods. Jacob did not know this and he said to her father, Laban: "`With whomever you find your gods, do not let him live. In the presence of our brethren, identify what I have of yours and take it with you.' For Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them." (Genesis 31:32) ie, he was in effect saying that she should die, although, of course, he did not know she had stolen them and that she would feign sickness to avoid being discovered. She later died in childbirth.
(b) Examples where husband curses his wife or parents curse their children, eg a husband says to his wife, "You cannot cook", or the following statements are made in respect of other people including children:
"You are no good"
"You are useless"
"You are a failure"
"You will never be any good"
"You are hopeless"
"You will never achieve anything"
"You are ugly"
"You are a bad person"
"You are always a liar"
"It's in the family and you are sure to get it" etc etc.

6. Self-imposed curses which become like inner vows. Examples:
"I'll never be any good"
"I'll never forgive myself"
"God doesn't love me"
"I'll never speak to ..... again"
"I hate myself"
"No-one loves me"
"I want to die, I'm better off dead"

Examples from Scripture:
(a) Genesis 27:13 Rebekah said:
"Let your curse be on me"
and in verse 46 she said:
"I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth;
...what good will my life be to me?"
She brought a curse on herself.
(b) Matthew 27:24&25, the Jews said, "Let His blood be on us and our descendants".
(c) Peter denied the Lord three times

7. Curses brought on by unscriptural covenants:
Exodus 23:32: "You shall make no covenant with them, nor with their gods." We are to make no covenant with those who are not committed as Christians. Freemasonry is an example of that with self-imposed curses, eg the 32nd degree
2 Corinthians 6:14-17: "Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: "I will dwell in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they shall be My people." Therefore "Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you."

8. Curses put on by the servants of Satan eg witch doctors, medicine men, tohungas etc.
Example: Numbers 22:4&6. Note this was a request by Moab to Balam to pronounce curses on Israel. It was a matter of their gods versus the true God. When people fought one another in the old days, they regarded it as a fight between their gods and the other gods, eg David and Goliath.
1 Samuel 17:43: " So the Philistine said to David, "Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?" And the Philistine cursed David by his gods."

Other reasons for curses:

1. Objects in homes (Deuteronomy 7:26) We are to have no abominable thing our home. This can cause children to be disturbed.

2. Soul ties These are soul ties which are contrary to God's purposes. Eg, in adultery, fornication (especially past sexual relationships). Ungodly soul ties can bring spiritual sickness. 1 Corinthians 6:18: "Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body."

Examples of wrongful sex are as follows:
Pre-marital sex Perverted sex
Trial marriages Homosexuality
Lesbianism Pornography and fantasy
Bestiality Transvestism
Sexual abuse

Consequences:

(a) Establishment of soul ties and bondings in the flesh other than with God's intended partner.
(b) Guilt and condemnation.
(c) Demonisation
(d) Emotional disturbance

What is sexual abuse?

Uninvited caressing
Uninvited handling of the sexual areas
Anal handling
Masturbation in front of a person
Forced oral sex
Forced mutual masturbation
Forced intercourse and rape
Bestiality
Ritualistic sex
Incest
All of these cause fear, confusion, deception.

Long term problems:

(a) Confusion of one's identity, sexuality, physical position and emotional situation.
(b) Causes regression and repression of memories. Causes fantasy.
(c) Breaking of trust.
(d) Causes rebellion including (i) self rejection (ii) fear of rejection and (iii) anger.
(e) Causes guilt and fear.
(f) Causes inability to respond to love.
(g) Causes desire to die.
(h) Causes physical illness.
(i) Causes damage to the spirit.

Also domination by one person over another, eg where a father dominates or sexually abuses his daughter.

HOW TO BE RELEASED FROM THE CURSE:

1. We must recognise that there is a curse.

2. We must repent from all sin.

3. We must renounce in the name of Jesus Christ.

4. We must resist, eg James 4:7: "Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you."

5. Use the Word of God. The Word of God is powerful and such Scriptures as the following can be used:
Psalm 118:17:
"I shall not die, but live,
And declare the works of the LORD."
We must realise that where there is a negative there should also be a positive. We recall that Peter denied the Lord three times but three times Jesus asked him, "Do you love me?" Peter had to revoke his earlier statement three times.
Where curses have arisen from the servants of Satan, we must recognise Luke 10:19: "Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you."

SUGGESTED PROCEDURE FOLLOWING SEMINAR ON DELIVERANCE AND CURSES

1. THE BLOOD SCRIPTURES
Ask everybody to stand and say the following Scriptures:
Psalm 107:2:
"Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom He hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy."
Ephesians 1:7:
"In whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace."

THROUGH THE BLOOD OF JESUS I AM REDEEMED OUT OF THE HAND OF THE DEVIL. THROUGH THE BLOOD OF JESUS ALL MY SINS ARE FORGIVEN.
1 John 1:7:
"But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin."

THE BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST, GOD'S SON, IS CLEANSING ME NOW AND CONTINUALLY FROM ALL SIN.
Romans 5:9:
"Much more then, being now justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him."

THROUGH THE BLOOD OF JESUS I AM JUSTIFIED, MADE RIGHTEOUS, JUST AS THOUGH I HAD NEVER SINNED.
Hebrews 13:12:
"Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people with His own blood, suffered outside the gate."

THROUGH THE BLOOD OF JESUS I AM SANCTIFIED, MADE HOLY, SET APART TO GOD.
1 Corinthians 6:19&20:
"Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?" For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's"

MY BODY IS A TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.
I AM REDEEMED, CLEANSED, SANCTIFIED BY THE BLOOD OF JESUS. THEREFORE THE DEVIL HAS NO MORE PLACE IN ME AND NO MORE POWER OVER ME.
THROUGH THE BLOOD OF JESUS I OVERCOME SATAN BY THE BLOOD OF THE LAMB AND THE WORD OF MY TESTIMONY.
(Revelation 12:11)

2. OCCULT

(a). Go through the occult check list and get people to tick anything that they have been in relating to the occult.

(b) Ask those who have been in the occult to stand and ask others to stand with them in order to pray for them.

(c) Then say the following prayer in regard to the occult:
"Lord Jesus Christ, I confess you are the only Son of God, that You died on the Cross for my sins and rose again. In Your name I now renounce all contact with the occult and in particular I renounce the following involvements in the occult .................... I receive Your forgiveness. Thank You Heavenly Father for delivering me in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ."
(d) The counsellors (ie those standing with the candidates for deliverance) should command the demons to go.

3. SOULISH TIES

(a) Ask those to come forward who know that they still have soulish ties, that is sense there is still some tie between them and some other person with whom they have had a previous relationship. This includes cases where women feel under the domination of their mother or men feel under the domination of their mother.

(b) Get people to stand with them to pray for them.

(c) Pray the general prayer for deliverance from soul ties:
"Dear Heavenly Father, as I come to You in the name of Jesus Christ in the authority that is in that name, I break every soul tie affecting my body, soul or spirit, which has existed between myself and ................... (name the individual). In the name of Jesus Christ, I specifically speak to every demonic power that has taken advantage of that link and I tell it that it has no rights here and it must leave now without going into any other member of my family. Thank you Lord Jesus that through Your shed blood and through Your wonderful name, I am able to be absolutely free. Thank you Lord."

(d) Get the people who need deliverance to cut the soulish ties around the people. Show them how to do this with a motion across the front of the body and across the head.

(e) The counsellors should command the demons to go.

4. INNER VOWS

(a) Ask those who know that they have made inner vows for which they need release to come forward and ask others to stand with them to pray for them again.

(b) Say the prayer and get the people to renounce those inner vows and as they do expect deliverance.
"In the name of Jesus Christ, I specifically renounce all vows which I have made, knowing or unknowingly, against myself. I specifically renounce.....(name those vows which you have made and which you know to be wrong). I ask you to totally cleanse me and set me free from the results of those vows and I thank you for doing it."

(c) The counsellors should command the demons to go.

5. PRONOUNCEMENT AND CURSES

(a) Ask those who feel that they have had pronouncements or curses placed upon them to stand and get somebody to stand with them to pray for them.

(b) They should then say the following prayer:
"Heavenly Father, I come to You in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the authority of that name I specifically renounce all curses that have been placed upon my life through the words of those who have abused and damaged me. I forgive them and I ask You Lord to release me from their consequences. Thank You Father, in Jesus' name."

(c) The counsellors should command the demons to go.

6. FINAL PRAYER:

"Dear Heavenly Father, I come to You in the name of Jesus Christ. I thank You Lord for Your love for me. I confess that Jesus Christ is my Lord and my Saviour and that He died and rose again from the dead.
I believe that through the blood of Jesus Christ I have been redeemed from the hand of the devil. I believe that through the blood of Jesus Christ all my sins have been forgiven. I believe that through the blood of Jesus Christ I have been sanctified, made holy to God. I believe that through the blood of Jesus Christ I have been justified just as if I had never sinned.
I now confess all my sins. I confess that in my own strength I have been unable to defeat the attacks of the enemy. I specifically renounce the following sexual sin .......... I confess I have been wrong. I renounce all pleasure connected with these sins. I now turn from my sin. I ask You, Father, to forgive me all that is past and give me discernment when the temptation arises and the strength to resist it. I ask You to heal my memories and to heal the hurts and forgive me in Jesus name.
I also specifically renounce any other sins such as rejection, unforgiveness. I especially forgive the following persons .................
I specifically honour my parents and I forgive them. I renounce my own sins and the sins of my ancestors in the name of Jesus Christ. I especially renounce all idolatry, witchcraft and everything of the occult and all the hidden things of darkness. I especially renounce all idolatry, witchcraft and everything of the occult and all hidden things of darkness. I believe that at the Cross of Jesus Christ I was delivered from every curse of the law. I call upon You, Lord Jesus, to set me free from every demonic power that has affected me.
Lord, I now renounce Satan and all his works. I hate his demons. I count them my enemies in the name of Jesus. I loose myself from every dark spirit, from every evil influence, from every satanic bondage, from any spirit in me that is not the Spirit of God. I command all such spirits to leave me now in the name of Jesus.
I call upon You, Lord Jesus, to set me free from every demonic power that has affected me. In the name of Jesus Christ, Risen Saviour, I command every demonic power that has lived within me or oppressed me to leave me now in the name of Jesus Christ. I declare that I am a child of the Living God and that Satan has no right to inhabit any part of me or to oppress me. I thank You Lord Jesus and I give You the glory. Amen."

REMEMBER.....

To be delivered:

(1) Confess the spirit in the name of Jesus.

(2) Renounce the spirit in the name of Jesus.

(3) Forgive others.

(4) Call on the name of the Lord Jesus.

Introduction

This lesson is about victorious Christian living. It is based on the Bible and addresses some problems that hinder our growth as Christians. Knowledge is vital to Christian growth. I trust that the answers I have provided to the questions raised in this lesson, will be helpful to you and others you will like to help. May the Holy Spirit give you insight as you go prayerfully through the lesson. There are some questions that apply to the situation in Cameroon.

Click [link] for bible reference (forth and back)

  1. Question: What are the main blockades to spiritual growth for a Christian?
    Answer:

    1. The main blockade to spiritual growth for me as a Christian is sin [i] and

    2. Emotional damage

(Emotional damage has for a great deal also to do with sin, especially the sin of unforgiveness. This sin of unforgiveness brings and keeps us in bondage of grief, resentment, bitterness and hatred. On the other hand by grief, resentment, bitterness and hatred we bind the offender in the spiritual realm)

  1. Question: On what aspects of my life does spiritual growth has its effect?
Answer: Spiritual growth has its effect on my Spirit, Soul and Body [ii]

SIN

  1. Question: What is sin?
    Answer:

    1. Sin is everything that does not agree with the truth and principles of the Word of God! [iii].

    2. Every sin in the end is in fact your contract with Satan that gives Satan the legal rights to attack you.

  1. Question: What do you need to be able to realize the topic of sin?
Answer: To realize the topic of sin we need the Fear of the Lord [iv] (not the fear of the Law, legalism), so that the Holy Spirit may convince me of my sins [v]

  2. Question: Whose sins have their impact on my life?
    Answer:

    1. Sins I did and still do myself [vi]

    2. Sins my (fore) fathers did and still do [vii]

    3. Sins of other people, they did and still do against me, Christians and non-Christians, like family (neglectfulness, negligence, carelessness, misuse, rejection, manipulation, domination, control, rape, etc.)

    4. Sins because of fallen mankind and creation (diseases like malaria?) [viii]

  3. Question: Can sin be inherited?
Answer: We are not guilty because of the sins of our forefathers [ix] and our parents, but we are vulnerable to those sins [x]. However, mind that there are implications or effects for the next generations. You should differentiate between 1) the punishment for the one that sinned and 2) the implications of those sins for next generations.

  4. Question: In what way can generational sins (like diseases, habits, customs and traditions) be inherited?
    Answer:

    1. Genetically predisposition (diseases)

    2. Environmentally predisposition (pornographic literature)

    3. Spiritually predisposition (prostitution, abuse, divorce, drunkenness) [xi]

  5. Question: What are biblical examples of sins of the forefathers that have their implications on the generations thereafter?
    Answer:

    1. Abraham. To spare his life he lied twice that Sarah was his sister [xii]. Realize how Isaak and Jacob in a lot of affairs were lying or were betrayed.

    2. King David. His sun died [xiii] and adultery by Amnon [xiv] and Absalom [xv] and family murder went on [xvi]. David was forgiven a curse came upon the descendants of David as foretold [xvii]

    3. King Josiah [xviii]. God punished the Israelites because they had forsaken the Lord and worshipped the idols under the kings Manasseh and his son Amon [xix].

  6. Question: What other biblical principle can be seen in the history of David?
Answer: Implications of not obeying the commandment: Honour your father and your mother [xx]. A curse automatically can come upon you [xxi]. Absalom raped a wife from his father David and fought against him to try to take the kingship from him [xxii]. Absalom was murdered himself at the end.

  1. Question: What do you have to do when you have sinned?
    Answer: I must:

    1. Repent [xxiii]

    2. Confess [xxiv]

    3. Ask God forgiveness for my sins [xxv]

    4. Hate my sins [xxvi]

    5. Leave my sins [xxvii]

    6. Be holy (as process) [xxviii]

    7. Be sanctified [xxix]

  2. Question: For which type of sins, God holds me responsible and must I repent and ask forgiveness?
Answer: God holds me responsible, I must repent and ask forgiveness for:

    1. Sins I did or do consciously [xxx]

    2. Sins I did or do unaware, unconsciously or unintentionally [xxxi]

    3. Sins I did or do out of ignorance [xxxii] and

    4. Sins because of the things I should do, but I did not do (neglectfulness, negligence and carelessness) [xxxiii]

  3. Question: Who more than I myself can be held responsible by God for a sin done unaware, unconsciously, unintentionally or out of ignorance?
    Answer:

    1. Anointed priest (individual responsibility) [xxxiv]

    2. Whole community (corporate responsibility) [xxxv]

    3. Leader (individual responsibility with corporate consequences) [xxxvi]

  4. Question: What can be a sin?
Answer: Witchcraft [xxxvii] and related detestable occult practices [xxxviii]

  5. Question: What does God say about detestable occult practices as witchcraft?
Answer: You are not allowed to do detestable practices as witchcraft. The LORD your God has not permitted you to do so [xxxix]

  6. Question: Can I, as a Christian, visit a traditional doctor?
Answer: The power of the traditional doctor does not originate from the God of Abraham and his Son Jesus. The traditional doctor is an example of an occult medium [xl]. The traditional doctor takes his power from an occult source, witchcraft. And as I am not allowed to take power from witchcraft, I shall not go to a traditional doctor [xli]. I am no longer protected because I sin. Every sin gives Satan legal rights to attack me. I defile myself and shall surely come under demonic power [xlii]. The Blood of Jesus no longer protects me on this sinful aspect of my life.

  7. Question: But I know somebody that was healed by visiting a traditional doctor (“traditional doctor” is in Cameroon the name for a witchcraft doctor).
Answer: Satan can heal. He is the ape of God. It is not the result that matters, but the source of the power that wrought the healing is wrong and has defiled you [xliii]. It is the job of satan to bind you to him and his practices. He also uses the method of healing for that purpose.

  8. Question: I have visited a traditional doctor, what shall I do?
Answer: You have defiled yourself, by visiting a traditional doctor (“traditional doctor” is in Cameroon the name for a witchcraft doctor). It is sin according to the word of God to visit somebody who practices divination [xliv]. Your Godly protection is in danger. Repent, ask forgiveness [xlv] and let you be set free from demonic influence by a qualified counselor.

  9. Question: Can I visit a funeral and may I speak or pray to the dead person? May I later pray on the graves?
Answer: Many funerals have occult practices and ceremonies. Food can be provided that has been consecrated to the devil and where the power of witchcraft is used. You defile yourself by visiting that funeral. On funerals is often prayed and spoken to the death person [xlvi]. You are not allowed to speak and communicate with dead people [xlvii]. By doing this you try to contact demonic spirits and may come under their influence. God therefore also forbids praying to dead people on graves. You defile yourself.

  10. Question: Can I visit my clan every year for a traditional meeting?
Answer: If God sends me for a reason, I must go. On the other hand I must question what a Christian has in common with a non-Christian [xlviii]? If I will be free I must separate from the family clan. If God has not given me an order to visit the clan meeting I should not visit it. What can I share? What do I share? Is it spiritual healthy what I would share? Does a visit bring me nearer to Christ? Does it give me a better understanding of the character of God? If not, I will defile myself. Ask yourself such questions.

  11. Question: Is it dangerous to have objects in my home, like souvenirs, certain non-Christian books or images?
Answer: If you have detestable objects in your house you are in danger. You and your house can come under a curse or other demonic influence [xlix]

  12. Question: What shall I do when I have detestable objects in my home?
Answer: You shall not have detestable objects in your home. You must confess your sins and destroy the objects [l]

  13. Question: Do the sins of my forefathers do have impact on my life?
Answer: God will punish the children for the sins of the fathers [li]

  14. Question: How can I be set free from the guilt because of the wickedness, sins and (generational) curses of my (fore) fathers?
Answer: I can be set free from the guilt because of the sins and curses of my (fore) fathers by repenting and confessing in their place. Ask God forgiveness for the wickedness and sins of your forefathers in their place [lii]. For the next step Jesus gives you supernatural power to break the contracts with satan and be set free from diseases, curses, unclean spirits and demonic influence working through the generations. Ask a counselor to help you through this process.

  15. Question: How shall I relate to my family and friends if they are unbelievers?
Answer: If my family and friends are unbelievers I must ask God for wisdom how to handle. I some cases I must separate [liii] from them if their influence on me is not healthy for my spiritual growth. The word of God says that I must separate [liv] and purify myself from everything that contaminates my body and my spirit [lv].

  16. Question: How can I let people know that I am a follower of Jesus Christ?
Answer: People can see that I am a Christian if we love one another [lvi].

HEALING OF DAMAGED EMOTIONS AND HURTS

Introduction:

  1. God does wants to heal you after 1) spirit, 2) soul and 3) body, not only after spirit.

  2. Key number one: Jesus went on the cross for your emotional damage and not only for your sins [lviii]. He was rejected, despised, spiritually and physically ill treated and died for your burden and pain! He already suffered for you, so that you no longer have to carry your emotional burdens yourself.

  3. Key number two: Forgiving [lix] is the solution [lx] for being healed of your emotional hurts and damage and the painful thoughts that come with those hurts. Healing of emotions and hurts in fact is based on repenting from the sins of unforgiveness and hatred.

  4. Bitterness, grief and resentment can get hold on you and become in a later stadium harshness and hate.

  5. Unforgiveness keeps you in bondage with the people and circumstances that hurt you in the past

  6. Unforgiveness or not to forgive is sin [lxi].

  7. God can not forgive you, if you do not forgive men [lxii].

  8. The result of the sins from people and your family against you, may be that you produce new sins against:

    1. yourself (like inner vows) and

    2. the people that sinned against you.

  1. These sins from people and your family against you have their effects on your:

    1. Spiritual system

    2. Mind system and intellectual functioning

    3. Social behavior patterns

    4. Emotional behavior patterns and

    5. Physical functions as a living creature made after the image of God.

  1. The pains did in an unhealthy way adapt you and bent down to people and circumstances.

  2. It takes time to be healed of the effects of the hurts on your spirit, soul and body.

  3. God wants to change you in the person he has made after his image.

  4. There is much power in confessing your sins [lxiii], repenting, forgiving [lxiv] and blessing [lxv]

  5. Forgiving is a process and starts with an act of your will from out of your soul.

  6. The process of forgiving should go on till it comes from out of your heart on a spiritual level [lxvi].

  7. The power of God will be set free due to the work of Jesus on the Cross for you [lxvii].

  8. Healing of emotions comes when you forgive the persons that have sinned against you and confess your sins out of your (sinful) reactions to others who sinned against you.

  9. If possible and appropriate make your excuses or ask forgiveness to the people to whom you reacted sinful.

  10. Healing of emotions is also healing of relationships [lxviii].

  11. Clean your heart from bitterness, grief, resentment, harshness and hate, called the works of the flesh [lxix], so that you are no longer bound to people and circumstances, that hurt you. If you do not your soul will be poisoned and at the end your body will be ill [lxx]. By this cleansing you also give free in the spiritual world the people that you have bound to you because of your sin of unforgiveness.

Solutions:

  1. Forgive [lxxi] the offender for his sin done to you.

  2. Bless the perpetrator [lxxii].

  3. Repent and ask God forgiveness for your sinful reaction against the offender (perpetrator) [lxxiii].

  4. If it is possible and appropriate make your excuses to the offender and ask forgiveness for your sinful reactions against him or her [lxxiv].

  5. Try to find and name your hurts and pains and ask Jesus to take them from you [lxxv].

  6. Start to seek and find out your bad and non-biblical thinking and speaking patterns due to your hurts.

  7. Name them as soon as they come up.

  8. Use the power that is in the word of God and learn the practice of proclamation.

  9. Come against 1) spiritual attacks, 2) bad thinking and 3) non-biblical speaking patterns and reject them in Jesus name.

  10. Control your mind [lxxvi] and place or proclaim the positive thinking or speaking patterns instead of the negative patterns.

  11. Proclaim against the powers of darkness that try to keep hold of your mind [lxxvii].

  12. God and his Son will do the healing work and the Holy Ghost will help remember you.

Advice: Read all the following verses in their context!

i[ ] Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear. For your hands are stained with blood, your fingers with guilt. Your lips have spoken lies, and your tongue mutters wicked things. No-one calls for justice; no-one pleads his case with integrity. They rely on empty arguments and speak lies; they conceive trouble and give birth to evil. They hatch the eggs of vipers and spin a spider’s web. Whoever eats their eggs will die, and when one is broken, an adder is hatched. Their cobwebs are useless for clothing; they cannot cover themselves with what they make. Their deeds are evil deeds, and acts of violence are in their hands. Their feet rush into sin; they are swift to shed innocent blood. Their thoughts are evil thoughts; ruin and destruction mark their ways. The way of peace they do not know; there is no justice in their paths. They have turned them into crooked roads; no-one who walks in them will know peace. So justice is far from us, and righteousness does not reach us. We look for light, but all is darkness; for brightness, but we walk in deep shadows. (Isaiah 59:1-9 NIV)

ii[ ] May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Thessalonians 5:23 NIV)

= So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law. The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other. (Galatians 5:16-26 NIV)

xxxiii[ ] If a person sins because he does not speak up when he hears a public charge to testify regarding something he has seen or learned about, he will be held responsible. (Leviticus 5:1 NIV). For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people. Therefore come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you. I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty. He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. By oppression and judgment he was taken away. And who can speak of his descendants? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was stricken.
